Offer Retracted

by Funtime on Jun.21, 2009, under Ramblings

Well, my offer to go out to Kuwait was retracted. It was taking too long to get the medical paperwork figured out and the primary contractor (Northrop Grumman) needed to get somebody out there ASAP. They said they would keep me in mind if any other positions open up, and there is a possibility of one opening in October. We’ll see…until then, I am laying low and doing my thing here in Broomfield.

Top Four Deadliest Volcanoes of All Time

by Funtime on Jun.16, 2009, under Ramblings

So I found this article today while reading some blogs which talked about the deadliest volcano eruptions of all time. Most people would think, and I did when starting the article too, that the Vesuvius eruption which wiped out Pompeii, or the Krakatoa eruption were the deadliest of all time, but it turns out we would be wrong. Plus, don’t forget about Mount St. Helens in the 1980’s, but then again, the earth is 65 million years old, so to think that those would be the deadliest is possibly pretty naive on our part….but don’t take my word for it. Check out the article.

Quick Update…

by Funtime on Jun.09, 2009, under Ramblings

Just wanted to provide a quick update on my decision to go to Kuwait or not. I have yet to decide. I am working on the paperwork for medical benefits. Turns out the company I would end up over there with does not have coverage for overseas unless it is a life or death situation. Seeing as I have a medical condition which requires full-time medication, and one specific medication I would need to acquire in country, I have begun searching for individual plans. I am talks with the HR representative regarding this and she is currently also assisting in the search for benefits while overseas. I will let everybody know what my decision is once I am sure whether or not my medications will be covered….which actually comes in handy because now I have a little more time to decide. :-P

Star Wars: The Old Republic Cinematic Trailer

by Funtime on Jun.03, 2009, under Entertainment, Video Games

I’ve never been a fan of Massive Multiplayer Online RPGs (MMORPG) like World of Warcraft (WoW), but one is coming out based in the Star Wars universe which might actually be kinda cool. The cinematic trailer for it is freaking awesome at least. Check it out below:

Pretty sweet, right?

To Go or Not To Go…

by Funtime on Jun.02, 2009, under Information Security, Ramblings

That is the question. I got offered a position working back out in Kuwait doing Information Security, much like I am now, but I’m not sure if I should take it or not. A lot of people are telling me I should go, and it would definitely be a great opportunity for me, but I’m just not sure. The pay would of course be big, and it would be huge for my career (working with new tools, senior level position, ability to further education through certs and college) but I’ve gained a lot since I came back to the states and am not sure I really want to give all that up. I will be making my decision today as the offer expires at COB (close of business) today, so I will update the blog tomorrow with my final decision. Any ideas, thoughts, or comments feel free to let me know in the comments section.

Happy Memorial Day!

by Funtime on May.25, 2009, under Ramblings

Just wanted to say Happy Memorial Day. This is a day to recognize all the troops who have given their lives in support of our country. This is an especially important day with the current war going on now. The soldiers, and civilians, deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan are sacrificing much to ensure our freedoms are intact. This is something I respect greatly.

Never Again…

by Funtime on May.11, 2009, under Ramblings

Never again will I ever be throwing an all inclusive, open invitation, bring your friends and their friends party at my house again. Over the weekend, my roommates and I decided it would be a great idea to throw a party at the house. The party was off the charts to say the least. We had upwards of 65 people in and out of the house. Beer pong in the garage. Went through two kegs and a giant gin bucket. Everybody was having a blast. Then at around 12:45am I go into my bedroom and notice my laptop is missing. Yes….you definitely read that correctly. Some punk ass piece of shit came into my house, drank my liquor, ate my food and then had the nerve to go into my bedroom and steal my laptop. Needless to say, we shut down the party and kicked EVERYBODY out of the house. Not a good time.

Due to this unfortunate news, I can now only post blog articles from either work, or my phone…so I will mostly be doing this from work as it is WAY easier to type on a real keyboard than it is on my phone keyboard. Haha :-) Anyway, just wanted to let you know what my weekend was like. As you can tell…not as stellar as we would have all thought and expected.

Adobe Reader/Acrobat Critical Vulnerabilities

by Funtime on May.05, 2009, under Information Security, Tech

I know how much you guys love your PDF files out there, so be sure to check this out.

A critical vulnerability has been discovered in the JavaScript handling within Adobe Reader and Acrobat versions 9.1 and earlier. According to the announcement, Adobe expects to make available Windows updates for Adobe Reader/Acrobat versions 9.X, 8.X, and 7.X, Macintosh updates for Adobe Reader/Acrobat versions 9.X and 8.X, as well as Adobe Reader for Unix versions 9.X and 8.X, by May 12th, 2009.

In the meantime, disable JavaScript in Reader and Acrobat by performing the following:

1. Launch Acrobat or Adobe Reader.
2. Select Edit > Preferences
3. Select the JavaScript Category
4. Uncheck the ‘Enable Acrobat JavaScript’ option
5. Click OK

That should disable the JavaScrpt functionality of Adobe products until the patch is pushed out next Tuesday…which also happens to be Microsoft patch Tuesday so I’m sure there will be a handful of Important/Critical patches to be installed on the 12th. Yea to M$ products! Lol :-)
